Position Summary :
Under direct supervision of a senior lineman and/or Foreman . Assists and participates in all phases of line work while demonstrating increased knowledge and aptitude for future advancement. Performs maintenance, service, and construction work on the cooperative's electric transmission and distribution system. Performs numerous duties involved in the maintenance and construction of lines in both energized and de-energized states overhead and underground. Work often involves climbing poles and working out of a bucket truck as needed . W ork on overhead lines , installing transformers, capacitors, regulators, or other line equipment. F ollow s Cooperative, NEC, NESC, OSHA, RUS and state and other regulatory agency rules and procedures in the conduct of their work. Called out for outages.

Job Requirements (Knowledge , Abilities and Skills):
Knowledge
Must be familiar with the considerable hazards of electric shock, electric flash, falls, falling objects, and traffic. Thorough knowledge and understanding of all line materials, assemblies, equipment, and RUS specifications. Ability to understand and follow Cooperative maps, Cooperative Safety manual, work orders, construction drawings, staking sheets and any type of Cooperative forms related to work being performed.
Abilities and Skills
Ability to understand and follow Cooperative maps, Cooperative Safety Manual, Work orders, construction drawings , staking sheets, and any type of Cooperative forms related to work being performed. Ability to be come certified in CPR, first aid, bucket rescue, and pole top rescue. Must also be skilled in the use of all safety equipment. Experience in performing related work from bucket trucks or from the tops of poles. Ability to communicate effectively with cooperative members, employees, and vendors. Able to promote continuous good member and public relations. Ability to make immediate decisions in situations that are dangerous to a co-worker or the public anytime a problem arises. Ability to learn Cooperative's service area, transmission and distribution system. Ability to learn and understand the installation of transformers, wiring of transformer banks, regulators, capacitors, and other electrical equipment. Ability to learn Cooperative's tariff policies that apply to Lineman duties. Skilled in problem solving and troubleshooting. Ha ve or must be able to obtain a commercial driver's license . Must maintain a good driving record and be insurable under the standard rate of the current carrier. May be required to operate heavy equipment , such as a bucket or digger truck, with accuracy. Depth/distance visual ability and eye-hand coordination necessary. Must pass a physical exam initially, and drug/controlled substance screening tests randomly. Must demonstrate ability to progress towards the position of Journeyman Lineman as per the Big Country Electric Cooperative Journeyman Lineman Certification Program.
Must have access to reliable transportation to and from work .
Essential Functions of the Job:
Depending on Experience : Assist lineman with daily construction and maintenance duties normally associated with an electric distribution system. Installs, removes, and repairs overhead and underground conductor and equipment, de-energized or energized, secondary and/or primary. Assist senior line personnel with work. Installs, repairs, and removes, transformers, regulators, capacitors, primary and secondary metering equipment, breakers, and other switching equipment. Frames and sets poles and anchors. Sometimes works with members on the placement of poles on their property. Responsible for direct and indirect supervision and training of other linemen as required. Regular attendance during normal business hours.
Incoming Lineman : Each lineman will be tested into the Big Country Electric Cooperative Journeyman Lineman Program by taking a computer-based knowledge test and a field performance evaluation. Once the results are compiled and considered, along with previous job experience, the lineman will be p laced in a classification level before any offer of employment is made.
