Engineering Technician II Dept. 27-Public Works

$3,267.00 per month/ $18.85 per hour

This is a full-time position requiring a self motivated individual desiring work performing varied tasks in multiple disciplines without close supervision. This person will perform design and keep records of plans and specifications of related projects. This person must also be able to read and evaluate engineering plans, make sound recommendations for changes to proposed plans by developers, engineers, and planners, etc. This person must be able to perform project quality control & inspections, and update pavement management program and infrastructure data into GIS program. An important emphasis is on using computer aided drafting and database tools to create and maintain infrastructure data in a manner permitting retrieval and analysis.

 EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC WORK PERFORMED:

 1) Will read and evaluate project plans and specifications to complete necessary design work;

 2) Will accomplish the necessary field work, including surveying to establish rights of way, grade and construction staking and inspections;

 3) Assist in development of CAD and database infrastructure including GIS records;

 4) Assists the in maintaining the Pavement Management System by entering data, inspecting pavement and researching costs;

 5) Perform testing in the field, of materials and/or finished work including density testing of backfill materials;

 6) Performs quality control inspection and evaluate procedures used on projects;

 7) Perform maintenance and minor repair to equipment used by this department;

 8) Develop plans for water, sewer, street, drainage and other Public Works projects as directed for approval by the City Engineer;

 9) Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 Indoors and outdoors, pleasant to unpleasant working conditions, adverse weather, poor light, odors, dirty conditions, with exposure to dust, fumes, odor, electrical, mechanical, traffic, chemical and toxic hazards. Moderate physical activity. Ability to sit, stand and drive a vehicle to and from various worksites; lift materials weighing up to 50 pounds occasionally. Bend, stoop, walk, kneel, dig, and stand; walk over sloped and uneven terrain; communicate in writing and verbally with the public and other city personnel. Ability to understand verbal and written communication.

 CONTACT WITH OTHERS:

 Daily contact with other City employees, contractors, utility company employees, and the general public.

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate; desirable experience includes the design, planning, and inspection of projects associated with municipal infrastructure (water, sewer, streets, storm sewer, etc). Must have knowledge in or be willing to learn field survey work and know how to obtain design information from the field and translate it into drawings and maps. College hours and/or courses in civil engineering desirable and have completed courses in computer and surveying; prefer two (2) or more years of experience in related field.

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 Must have working knowledge of Trigonometry and Plane Geometry; Develop ability to operate surveying equipment (Level, Total Station, EDM and GPS); ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, charts, graphs and notes and analyze requirements for finished notes or drawings; must be computer literate and have ability to learn MicroStation and ArcGIS CAD programs; proficient with standard word processing, database, spreadsheet, imaging programs; and surveying; knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in construction, maintenance and operations of streets, water distribution, and wastewater collection; must have good communication skills; ability and desire to work with others.

 REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

 Valid Texas Driver License. Must have or be able to obtain certificate for class “101 Portable Nuclear Density/Moisture Gauge Use and Safety Training” offered by the American Technical Institute before use of the Nuclear Density Machine. Must meet this requirement within 1 year of appointment to this position.
